Chilton Woods State Forest, Protected area in Lancaster County, Virginia, United States
Chilton Woods State Forest is a woodland area in Lancaster County, Virginia, covering around 400 acres. The land features loblolly pine and mixed pine-hardwood forests with several tributaries of the Rappahannock River running through it.
The forest was established in 2000 when Catherine Chilton transferred the land to the Virginia Department of Forestry. This donation fulfilled her husband's wishes expressed in his 1973 estate plans.
The Northern Neck Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists maintains trails throughout the forest to promote environmental education and wildlife observation.
Visitors ages 16 and older need a permit to hunt, fish, hike, ride horses, or bike on the property. It helps to check local rules before visiting to understand what activities are available for your interests.
The property is home to rare orchid species like pink lady's slipper orchids that visitors can discover while hiking. These wild flowers signal the forest's healthy natural balance.
