Kirkland Grove Campground, Historic Baptist campground in Heathsville, Virginia

Description

Kirkland Grove Campground is a historic Baptist meeting ground in Heathsville, Virginia, featuring a large main Tabernacle, a structure for visitors' tents, and a separate shelter for the preacher. The main building stands on a large open property with wooden support columns rising beneath a layered metal roof.

History

This place was established in 1892 as a gathering spot for week-long religious meetings that drew communities from across the Northern Neck region. The layout and buildings still show how these multi-day events were organized and conducted.

Culture

Three Baptist churches across the Northern Neck region held revival meetings here, and this site is the only one that still maintains its original main building from that era. Walking the grounds today, visitors can sense how the space was designed to gather communities for spiritual experiences.

Practical

The property spans around 23 acres and sits a short distance south of Heathsville along a rural road, making it accessible by car. Walking the grounds is the best way to see the buildings and understand how the space was arranged.

Did you know?

The grounds were named after Dr. William Heath Kirk, a Baptist minister who worked in the county from 1845 to 1884. This choice of name honors a respected spiritual leader who shaped the religious life of the area.
