Christman Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary

Christman Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of roughly 105 acres in Schenectady County with mixed woodland and open spaces. A 30-foot waterfall marks the landscape, with several hiking trails connecting historical buildings and natural features throughout the property.

The sanctuary began in 1888 with a winter bird feeding program started during harsh weather conditions. This effort to help wildlife through a difficult season grew into the land protection effort known today.

The historic buildings on the grounds reflect how people lived and worked in this valley during the agricultural era. Walking through the site, visitors encounter structures that show the daily routines and needs of past residents.

The trails are well-marked and accessible on foot, though some sections involve climbing due to the hilly terrain. Sturdy shoes are recommended as paths can be muddy or uneven depending on recent weather and season.

The sanctuary is home to one of the oldest continuous bird feeding and protection programs in North America, with roots reaching back to the late 1800s. This enduring commitment to wildlife care sets it apart from other natural areas in the region.
