City Tavern Club, Private social club in Georgetown, Washington DC, United States

The City Tavern Club is a three-story brick building with Georgian architectural features located at 3206 M Street NW in Georgetown. Its interior preserves formal dining rooms and design details from the Federal period.

Built in 1796, this Federal-era tavern was a meeting place for influential figures during the early years of the American Republic. It remained active for over 200 years before closing in 2024.

The building served as a gathering space where Georgetown's residents conducted elections and community matters. It reflects how social clubs functioned as centers of civic life in early American cities.

The property is now managed by the City Tavern Preservation Foundation, which organizes educational programs about American history and architecture. Visitors can join guided tours or attend events to learn about the building and its historical significance.

This is the last remaining Federal-era tavern in Washington DC and was saved from demolition in 1959 by local residents. The rescue effort, which included prominent collector Paul Mellon, demonstrates how community action preserved this building for future generations.
