Coffeen Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, Wildlife management area in Montgomery County, US.
Coffeen Lake is a wildlife management area covering approximately 297 acres of oak-hickory forests and water bodies in central Illinois. The site is bordered by a dam and provides habitat for various fish species and wildlife.
The lake was created in 1963 when a dam was built across East Fork of Shoal Creek. This development later established the area as a protected space for fish and wildlife.
The area reflects the natural diversity of the southern Illinois plains, where wooded sections and open spaces meet. Visitors experience this mixture directly while walking through the grounds.
The area has two boat ramps, including a handicap-accessible loading platform at the main entrance and a single-lane ramp at the north access point. These facilities accommodate different landing needs based on visitor requirements.
The lake operates under specific boating rules that allow only motorboats with 25 horsepower or less. This regulation helps maintain a quieter environment and protects the natural habitats within the water.
