Confederate Monument at Crab Orchard
Confederate Monument at Crab Orchard, War memorial at Crab Orchard Cemetery, Kentucky, United States.
The Confederate Monument at Crab Orchard is a white marble obelisk approximately 10 feet tall, surrounded by about 21 graves of soldiers from various Southern states. The structure stands as a focal point within the cemetery, marking a specific section dedicated to those it commemorates.
The monument was built in 1872 to commemorate soldiers who died during the Civil War. The graves were consolidated at this cemetery about a year earlier, bringing together remains from different locations.
The monument displays inscriptions carved in Latin and English on its sides, with marble relief work showing Confederate symbols. These details reflect how communities chose to remember and honor those they commemorated.
The site is located roughly half a mile east of where Kentucky Routes 39 and 643 meet in Lincoln County. Access is through the cemetery grounds, which can be reached via a typical country road.
The monument brings together soldiers from four different states: Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas, whose remains were moved here in 1871. This gathering from multiple regions shows how far the reach of certain battles extended across the South.
