College Hall, Academic building at Michigan State University, United States
College Hall was a three-story brick building with large windows that housed laboratories, classrooms, and administrative offices across multiple floors. The structure served diverse academic purposes and anchored the campus before its demolition in 1918.
Built in 1856, it was the first structure in the US designed specifically to teach scientific farming methods. This pioneering building established agricultural science as an academic discipline and launched Michigan State University's reputation as a leader in this field.
The building represented a milestone in agricultural education, establishing Michigan State University as a leader in scientific farming instruction.
The building once stood in the center of campus and was readily accessible to students and visitors. Today visitors can explore the site where it stood or view the original university seal, which still features its image.
Although the building was demolished in 1918, its image lives on in the university's official seal and appears there to this day. This makes it an invisible symbol on every document and badge representing the institution.
