Deer Lake, lake in Killingworth
Deer Lake is a reservoir in Killingworth, Connecticut, created by a dam and covering about 32 acres. The water is surrounded by dense forests and remains mostly undeveloped, with clear water that often allows visibility to the bottom near the shore.
The reservoir was created by a dam and has served the community as an outdoor recreation center for decades. The site once hosted the Deer Lake Scout Reservation, a Boy Scout camp for youth programs, until the property was transferred to Pathfinders, Inc. in 2022 to continue outdoor education and camping activities.
Deer Lake has served as a gathering place for outdoor learning and community events, where families and groups come together to experience nature. Today, the site remains a focal point for local activities, with programs designed to build skills and connections among visitors of all ages.
The lake is open from dawn to dusk and offers walking trails, boat rentals, and camping options available throughout the year. The site provides courses in water safety and boating skills, with various outdoor activities like canoeing, hiking, and fishing available for visitors of different abilities.
A 2009 scientific study documented nineteen species of aquatic plants in the lake, including the invasive fanwort that covers much of the water. Visitors can observe the interplay between native plants like watershield and white water lilies and the spreading fanwort, which continues to shape the local ecosystem.
