Dakota Zoo, Animal sanctuary in Bismarck, United States.
Dakota Zoo sits on expansive grounds along the Missouri River and displays animals from different climate zones and habitats. The park is designed so visitors can experience a variety of large cats, bears, and other species in one location.
The zoo was founded in the 1960s when its creators began caring for animals that could not survive elsewhere. From this rescue operation for wildlife, it gradually developed into a public facility with a growing population of residents from around the globe.
The zoo serves as a place where visitors regularly observe animals from around the world and learn about their habitats through daily activities. Feeding demonstrations and animal care sessions allow people to see how staff members work with the residents, making the behind-the-scenes efforts visible to guests.
A visit works best when you take time to walk, since enclosures are spread out and you move between them on foot. It helps to arrive early in the day when animals are more active and the sun is not yet intense.
The facility has focused on rescuing and caring for injured and orphaned wildlife, a mission that continues to this day. This rescue function means many of the animals you see could not survive in the wild and receive a second chance here.
