Delhi Bridge, Historic road bridge in Scio Township, Michigan.
Delhi Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Huron River in Scio Township with a wrought iron Pratt truss structure. It carries East Delhi Road and accommodates only single-lane traffic with signal controls.
The original structure was built in 1883 to replace a wooden bridge from 1851. After a tornado destroyed it in 1917, it was reconstructed and later listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The East Delhi Bridge Conservancy actively engages in preservation efforts, demonstrating the local community commitment to maintaining historical transportation infrastructure.
The bridge accommodates only vehicles of suitable width due to the single-lane design with signal control. Visitors should expect slow-moving traffic and be aware that access may be limited depending on weather conditions.
After the devastating 1917 tornado, local residents Edward Outwater and Eli Gallup executed a remarkable recovery effort. They used horse teams and determination to bring the bridge structure back from the river bottom.
