Demuth Museum

The Demuth Museum is an art gallery in Lancaster housing a collection of paintings and works on paper created by Charles Demuth. The 1820s building contains exhibition spaces showcasing rotating displays alongside a preserved Victorian garden accessible to visitors.

The house was built in the 1820s and later became the residence of painter Charles Demuth, who lived and worked here until 1935. The building thus became central to the development of American modernist painting during the early twentieth century.

The artist's daily life unfolded in this house, and visitors can observe how his living spaces were also his workspaces where creativity happened. The home itself reflects the connection between his personal world and the art he produced.

The museum offers free entry and is accessed through an archway from East King Street in downtown Lancaster. The gallery spaces flow naturally and connect directly to the outdoor garden area.

Each June the museum hosts a garden tour featuring both the home grounds and twenty private gardens throughout Lancaster that inspired the artist's work. This event reveals how local botanical spaces shaped his artistic vision and practice.
