Drake Fieldhouse, Athletic facility at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, United States.
Drake Fieldhouse is an athletic building on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. It contains an indoor running track, training areas, locker rooms for student athletes, and administrative offices for several sports programs.
The building opened in 1926 as the home court for the Drake Bulldogs basketball team. The last basketball game played there was in 1987, after which the building shifted away from hosting competitive events.
The Warren Gaer room, named after a former Drake football coach, serves as a meeting space for the Bulldogs football team inside the building. Visitors who look closely at the interior will notice how the space mixes old construction details with modern sports use.
Most training rooms and locker rooms are on the ground floor, while the upper levels are mainly used for offices. The indoor track is an older surface, so it is worth paying attention to footing, especially at higher speeds.
The indoor track has banked curves, a design from the 1920s meant to help runners carry speed through turns. This type of construction is now rarely found in modern indoor facilities.
