Doris

Doris is a wooden sailing yacht located in Deep River that measures approximately 78 feet in length. The vessel features metal reinforcement brackets and oak frames that are bent to provide structural support throughout its hull.

The yacht was constructed in 1904 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Rhode Island for a wealthy investor. Throughout its life, the vessel acquired several different names including Astarte, Huntress, and Vayu before returning to its original name.

The yacht earned recognition after defeating Gloriana, another Herreshoff design, in multiple match races near Marblehead, Massachusetts during its early racing career.

The boat is moored at a historic location on the East Coast and can be viewed from the exterior. The best way to see it is by walking along the waterfront to observe the details of the wooden construction.

The original construction drawings of the vessel are housed at a university in the northern part of the country and can be viewed by those interested in shipbuilding. These documents reveal the technical care that went into the design.
