Doris, Historical sailing yacht in Deep River, US
The Doris sailing yacht measures 78 feet in length and features metal hanging knees and oak frames bent over the ceiling for structural support.
Constructed in 1904 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, Doris was commissioned by investment banker S. Reed Anthony for 18,000 dollars.
The yacht earned recognition after defeating Gloriana, another Herreshoff design, in multiple match races near Marblehead, Massachusetts during its early racing career.
The vessel underwent several name changes, including Astarte, Huntress, and Vayu, before returning to its original name Doris under owner Brian Amble.
Original construction drawings of this National Register of Historic Places vessel are maintained at the Hart Nautical Museum at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
