Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is an expansive green space divided into more than 15 distinct garden sections containing thousands of labeled plant and tree species from around the world. The organized layout helps visitors navigate the grounds and learn about the botanical collections at their own pace.

The gardens were founded in 1980, converting former farmland into botanical collections through decades of development. Community involvement drove this transformation from agricultural use to an established green space for public enjoyment.

This place serves the community as a learning hub where people explore plant life and environmental stewardship together. Visitors experience hands-on connections with gardening practices and gain a deeper appreciation for green spaces in their region.

The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset year-round at no cost to visitors. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for seasonal weather to fully explore the various garden paths and planted areas.

Around 300 dedicated volunteers maintain the entire grounds, making it the largest volunteer-operated facility of its kind in the nation. This grassroots effort creates a well-cared-for space where visitors sense the deep community investment in every corner.
