Dubuque County Courthouse, Renaissance Revival courthouse in downtown Dubuque, United States
Dubuque County Courthouse is a county courthouse in downtown Dubuque built in the Renaissance Revival style, featuring a central tower that rises prominently above the surrounding buildings. A bronze statue of Lady Justice crowns the top of this tower.
This building was designed in 1891 by architect Fridolin Heer to replace an earlier courthouse that stood on this site. It gained recognition through listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
The courthouse shows the influence of the Beaux-Arts movement through its decorated surfaces, strong columns, and sculptural details that you can see across the building.
The building is located on Central Avenue in the heart of downtown and houses government offices with modern elevators for easy access throughout. Visitors should expect to go through security screening at the entrance.
During World War I, several tin statues decorating the building were removed and melted down to contribute materials for the war effort. This wartime repurposing is a part of the building's lesser-known history.
