Eloise, Psychiatric hospital in Westland, Michigan, US.
Eloise was a psychiatric hospital in Michigan that grew into an enormous medical campus over several decades. Of the original 78 structures, five buildings still stand today, including the Kay Beard Building that houses a museum about the institution's history.
The complex began in 1839 as a poorhouse for Wayne County and evolved over a century into a major psychiatric facility with a sanatorium. The institution closed in 1982 after providing medical care to the region for more than 140 years.
At its height, locals simply called this place Eloise, a name still familiar to museum visitors today. The designation became so common that it formed the institution's mailing address and shaped the identity of the place for generations.
The museum inside the Kay Beard Building displays objects from medical practice and administrative records from the operating years. The collection offers insight into daily operations and treatment methods used across the decades.
The facility operated its own bakery, dairy, and farmland to feed thousands of patients and staff members. This self-contained operation even included a power plant that generated energy for the entire complex.
