Epps 1907 Monoplane, Early aircraft prototype in Athens, United States.
The Epps 1907 Monoplane is an early experimental aircraft built from scrap timber with an open framework supported by wire bracing. It featured a single wing design, bicycle wheels for landing gear, and a simple seat for the pilot positioned beneath the wing structure.
Ben T. Epps built this machine in October 1907 at his bicycle workshop in Athens, Georgia. The successful test flight marked the beginning of powered aviation in the state.
The machine emerged from a bicycle workshop, reflecting how early aviation grew directly from local mechanical traditions. This connection shows how ordinary craftspeople became pioneers in a completely new field.
The aircraft is displayed indoors in a museum setting where you can examine its hand-built construction up close. Visit during daytime hours when natural light helps reveal the details of the wooden frame and fabric covering.
The engine came from a motorcycle and was never designed for aircraft use originally. This improvisation with off-the-shelf parts shows how early aviation pioneers had to work creatively with whatever resources they could find.
