President's House, Presidential residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC, US
The President's House is the official residence of the US President in Washington DC and consists of multiple wings and rooms used for different functions. The grounds also include several gardens and green spaces that surround the main building.
President John Adams moved into the still-incomplete building in 1800. During the War of 1812, British forces destroyed the house, which was then rebuilt.
The building displays American artworks and furnishings from different periods of US history. Visitors can see decorative objects that reflect the cultural development of the nation.
Visiting requires advance registration and security screening since this is an active government building. Plan for limited access, as certain areas are not open to the public.
First Lady Dolley Madison rescued George Washington's portrait in 1814 before advancing British troops arrived. This quick action saved one of the nation's most valued artworks from destruction.
