Sanford Stadium, College football stadium in Athens, United States
Sanford Stadium is a football stadium in Athens in the United States, located on the campus of the University of Georgia. The playing field runs in an east-west direction and is surrounded by dense hedges, while the stands are arranged in multi-tiered rows that reach down to the edge of the field.
The stadium opened in 1929 with a capacity for 30,000 spectators and was financed through loans guaranteed by supporters of the university. Over the decades it was expanded multiple times so that today nearly 93,000 people can fit inside.
The grass is framed by privet hedges that have been part of the stadium for decades and are maintained by students and volunteers. Game days draw tens of thousands of fans wearing red and black jerseys who set up grills and celebrate on the surrounding lawns of the campus before kickoff.
The stadium has multiple entrances around the outer ring that are assigned to different sections on game days. Parking lots are located on campus grounds and in the nearby area, but become crowded on game days so many visitors use buses or walk instead.
Inside the stadium there is a small mausoleum where deceased mascots of the football team are buried. This resting place is located near the playing field and is occasionally visited by fans who want to pay their respects to the former four-legged ambassadors of the university.

This collection gathers the largest stadiums on the planet, ranked by seating capacity. From the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, India, which hosts major cricket matches, to the vast American university arenas dedicated to football, and the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, these sports facilities demonstrate the scale that infrastructures for competitions and mass gatherings can reach. Each stadium has its own identity: some are exclusively dedicated to a specific sport, while others serve as flexible venues capable of hosting various events. Their sizes enable them to accommodate between 100,000 and over 150,000 spectators, providing organizers the opportunity to gather large crowds for international competitions, national finals, or major ceremonies.
