Stegeman Coliseum, Sports arena in Athens, Georgia, US
Stegeman Coliseum is a sports arena in Athens with a distinctive barrel-shaped roof and U-shaped seating arrangement that accommodates roughly 10,500 spectators. The building has undergone extensive updates, including cushioned seats, modern restrooms, and LED display systems throughout the facility.
The building opened in 1964 and replaced Woodruff Hall, which had served as the previous venue with only 3,000 seats since 1923. This new construction represented a major step forward in college sports facilities for the region.
This venue serves as the home court for the University of Georgia Bulldogs basketball and gymnastics teams, drawing crowds of supporters throughout the season. It functions as a gathering place where the campus community comes together to watch collegiate sports.
The arena is easily accessible for visitors with ample parking and food concessions available throughout the facility. Check the event calendar before your visit, as operating hours vary depending on scheduled competitions and programs.
The roof features a remarkable structural design: a separate roof section is connected to the main building by aluminum bellows that expand and contract with temperature changes. This clever solution was innovative for its era and demonstrates early application of flexible engineering in building design.
