Gur-e Amir, Royal mausoleum in Samarkand, Uzbekistan
The Gur-e Amir features a massive double dome covered in light and dark blue tiles, with an entrance portal decorated with geometric patterns and calligraphy.
Built in 1403, the mausoleum holds the remains of Timur, the Central Asian ruler who established a vast empire stretching from Turkey to India.
The building represents the height of Timurid architecture, with its detailed tilework, muqarnas vaulting, and Persian artistic elements influencing later Islamic structures.
Visitors can explore both the exterior decorations and interior chamber, where carved marble sarcophagi of Timur and his family members rest beneath ornate canopies.
Soviet archaeologists opened Timur's tomb in 1941 despite local warnings of a curse, coinciding with the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.
