Cẩm Phả

Cẩm Phả is an industrial port city on the northeastern coast of Vietnam in Quảng Ninh Province, stretching across mountainous terrain and a coastline dotted with islands. The landscape is defined by hills descending to the sea, while several rivers flow through the city area.

The French coal company SFCT began managing regional coal resources in 1886, transforming the area into a major industrial center during the colonial period. After French rule ended, the city developed into a significant port and economic center for northern Vietnam.

The name Cẩm Phả comes from Hanese texts meaning 'splendor and spaciousness', a term the Tanka people used to describe a stone structure near Hạ Long Bay. Local residents have preserved this name and use it to express the connection between the city and the sea.

The city sits about 180 kilometers south of Hanoi and offers various transportation options for visitors exploring the region. The best way to navigate different areas is using local transport or organized tours that connect the main attractions.

Ben Do fish market serves as the region's largest wholesale seafood center, where hundreds of boats gather each morning for trading activities. Activity begins before sunrise when fishermen land their overnight catches and local buyers select the best products.
