Cần Thơ, Commercial center in Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Cần Thơ is a city in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam that spreads along the Hậu River and serves as the commercial center of the region. A network of canals cuts through residential areas and rice paddies, connecting urban districts with rural zones at the edges.
The settlement emerged in 1789 as a military post and grew into the main trading hub of the delta. In 2004 it gained independent municipality status and became the fourth-largest city in the country.
The Cái Răng floating market serves as a meeting point for farmers and traders from across the delta who sell their goods directly from boats at sunrise. Long bamboo poles carry samples of fruits and vegetables on offer, allowing buyers to see from a distance what is available.
The international airport sits about 10 kilometers northwest of the center and connects the city with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Fast hydrofoil boats run daily between the riverfront and Ho Chi Minh City, offering an alternative way to arrive through the waterways.
In a village on the outskirts, craftspeople make rice paper using the old method by pouring thin rice layers onto bamboo mats and drying them in the sun. Visitors can watch the entire process, from preparing the rice batter to peeling the dried sheets off the racks.
