Turtle Tower, Stone tower on Hoan Kiem Lake, Vietnam
The three-story tower rises from a small island in the center of Hoan Kiem Lake, featuring traditional Vietnamese architectural elements with European influences.
French colonial authorities approved the tower's construction in 1886, replacing the former Ta Vong Temple that occupied the site during the 17th century.
The tower represents the legend of Le Loi returning a magical sword to the Dragon King through a golden turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake.
Visitors can observe the tower from multiple vantage points around Hoan Kiem Lake, with the best photography opportunities occurring during morning hours.
The structure initially displayed a miniature Statue of Liberty on its top until 1945, when Vietnamese authorities removed it after the French colonial period.
