Dong Xuan Market, Indoor market in Old Quarter, Hanoi, Vietnam.
Dong Xuan Market is a three-story covered market hall in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, topped with five domes rising 19 meters (approximately 62 feet) above the floor. The building covers around 6,500 square meters and forms one of the largest roofed commercial structures in the city.
The French administration created the complex in 1889 by merging Bach Ma Market and Cau Dong Market near Thang Long Citadel. The construction aimed to consolidate trade in the growing city quarter and facilitate the flow of goods.
Each floor serves specific purposes: ground level for food and appliances, second for clothing, and third for children and maternity items.
The hall opens daily from 5 AM to 7 PM, with a night market running Friday through Sunday from 6 PM to 10:30 PM. The aisles see heavy foot traffic, especially in the morning, so moving through the space requires patience.
The roof structure combines three triangular sections into a honeycomb pattern, joining European market hall design with Vietnamese timber framing techniques. This layout helps air circulate in the upper floors and contributes to cooling the interior spaces.
