Sơn Mỹ Memorial, Memorial site in Son My, Vietnam

The memorial is a commemorative site featuring preserved village buildings, exhibition halls, and marble plaques engraved with the names of 504 people who died. The location combines physical structures with documented accounts, offering a comprehensive record of what occurred.

On 16 March 1968, American soldiers conducted a military operation that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians. This event became a turning point in how the war was perceived both internationally and by the Vietnamese population.

The site displays photographs, personal belongings, and documents that reflect the perspectives and testimonies of survivors and local residents. Visitors can understand the lived experiences of people who witnessed these events through these physical objects and records.

The site is located about 13 kilometers northeast of Quang Ngai city center and offers guided tours and educational programs. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the different exhibition areas and outdoor spaces while taking in the information presented.

The central monument was created by artist Ho Thu at the exact location where many villagers died during the incident. This placement creates a direct spatial connection between the memorial and the tragic event itself.
