Levanger Municipality, Administrative district in Trøndelag, Norway
Levanger Municipality is an administrative district along the eastern shore of Trondheimsfjorden in Trøndelag. Several settlements including Eidsbotn, Åsen, Ekne, and Skogn spread across the coastal and inland areas of the territory.
The territory was established as an administrative district in 1838 under the formannskapsdistrikt law. Subsequent municipal mergers and boundary changes over the years shaped it into its current form.
The name comes from Old Norse words meaning sheltered fjord, which describes how the landscape sits protected by water and surrounding land.
The area is accessible by roads that connect its various settlements. Visitors should allow time to explore the spread-out villages and the surrounding fjord landscape at a comfortable pace.
Archaeological findings at the Alvshaugen burial mound near Alstadhaug Church date from around 300-600 CE. These discoveries show that people have lived in the region since Iron Age times.
