Hestskjær Lighthouse

Hestskjaer Lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete structure located on the Norwegian coast in Averoy Municipality, featuring a white exterior and red lantern at its top. The beacon rises approximately 21 meters above sea level and serves as a navigation aid for vessels in the region.

The structure was built in 1879 with a square tower design and received its current cylindrical form along with automation upgrades in the mid-1980s. This modernization allowed the beacon to operate more efficiently without permanent staff on site.

The lighthouse represents an important navigation landmark for the coastal region and holds significance in local maritime memory. Visitors notice how it serves as a visual reference point that connects people to the sea and its history of travel.

The lighthouse is easily accessible from the coast but stands on a rock in open water and is normally viewed from a distance. Visitors should choose clear weather and be aware that landing is not possible, making binoculars or cameras with zoom lenses helpful for viewing details.

Two ships, the SS Irma and SS Henry, sank near this lighthouse during World War II in 1944. These wrecks now rest on the seabed and stand as reminders of the dangers vessels faced in this region.
