Varden, Observation tower in Kristiansund, Norway
The Varden tower stands 78 meters above sea level, offering views across Kristiansund, the Grip fishing village, and Smøla on the horizon.
In 1892, Kristiansund marked its 150th anniversary by replacing the original wooden structure with a brick tower at the Varden observation point.
The tower serves as a central gathering point where locals and visitors observe the mountains of Nordmøre and monitor maritime activities in the Atlantic Ocean.
Visitors can access the tower daily without admission fees, and if the door is locked, a remote fire safety officer will open it upon ringing the bell.
Former Kristiansund residents living in Oslo donated a replica of the original wooden tower to the municipality in 1992.
