Varden, Observation tower in Kristiansund, Norway
Varden is an observation tower in Kristiansund that rises 78 meters above sea level. From the top, you can look out over the town, the fishing village of Grip, and across to the island of Smøla.
The original wooden structure was replaced with a brick tower in 1892 when the town celebrated its 150th anniversary. This change marked the modernization of the observation point at this location.
The tower serves as a gathering spot where you can see out over the water and surrounding landscape with both locals and visitors. It has become a place where people come to take in the views of the region.
The tower is accessible daily with no admission fee. If the door happens to be locked, a fire safety officer can open it for you upon request.
In 1992, former residents of Kristiansund living in Oslo donated a replica of the original wooden tower to the town. This gift was a surprising return connection to their childhood home.
