Storseisundet Bridge, Cantilever bridge in Averøy, Norway
Storseisundet is a cantilever bridge in Møre og Romsdal stretching 260 meters between Averøy and Hustadvika municipalities. Its prestressed concrete roadway follows a gentle curve 23 meters above sea level, resting on three spans that cross the open sound.
The bridge opened in 1989 as part of County Road 64, completing the connection from the mainland to the island of Averøy. Its completion marked the end of a construction phase that linked several smaller islands along the coast.
The bridge connects two coastal regions and stands as an example of Norwegian construction that adapts to the harsh marine environment without resisting it. Its name derives from the sound it crosses, and its curved line follows the natural topography of the archipelago.
Crossing takes only a few minutes, and during strong wind or rain the drive over open water can be intense. Pedestrians may also use the bridge but should watch for gusts that can arise along the exposed coast.
From some viewpoints the roadway seems to break off abruptly and plunge into the sea, although the structure is continuous. This illusion arises from the angle of the curve and the position of the observer on the coast.
