Norwegian Aviation Museum, National aviation museum in Bodø Municipality, Norway.

The Norwegian Aviation Museum is an aviation museum in Bodø housed in a building designed to resemble a propeller. It displays both military and civilian aircraft from different periods of aviation history.

King Harald V opened the museum in 1994 after years of debate between two Norwegian communities over where the national aviation collection should be located. Bodø was ultimately chosen as the home for this institution.

The exhibition showcases how Norway's population has relied on flying for generations due to the country's vast and scattered geography. Visitors see how aviation shaped the way communities stay connected and how essential air travel remains in daily Norwegian life.

The museum is open during standard hours most days, allowing visitors time to explore the extensive collection at a comfortable pace. It helps to check in advance if special tours or rotating exhibitions are on display during your visit.

The museum houses an American U-2 spy plane that crashed over Norway during the Cold War and sparked an international incident. This aircraft is among the rarest aircraft on display anywhere in Europe.

Global tour of aviation museums and heritage

Aerospace museums hold airplanes that have marked the history of flight, often displayed in large hangars or outside. You can see military aircraft used during world conflicts, commercial planes that carried the first passengers, as well as experimental prototypes and objects from the early days of flying. These collections tell the story of how flying has grown, from early attempts to space rockets. Important places include the national museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio, which shows hundreds of aircraft sorted by period, and the Royal Air Force Museum in London, which shares British aviation history. In Europe, the Museo del Aire in Madrid displays over 150 Spanish military planes, and the Caproni Museum in Trentino gathers dozens of Italian aircraft along with many technical documents. In Russia, the Central Museum of the Air Forces near Moscow keeps Soviet-era airplanes and engines. These museums help visitors understand how flying developed in each country and how it changed travel and moving around.
