Saltstraumen Bridge

The Saltstraumen Bridge extends 768 meters across the Saltstraumen strait, connecting the islands of Knaplundøya and Straumøya with a main span of 160 meters.

Following its completion in 1978, the Saltstraumen Bridge received recognition for engineering excellence with the Betongtavlen award in 1985 for concrete architecture.

The bridge structure forms an essential connection between communities in Nordland county, enabling regular interactions and exchange between local populations.

The bridge features an anemometer system that monitors wind conditions, leading to temporary closures approximately two to three times per year for safety purposes.

The structure crosses over the Saltstraumen, where powerful tidal currents create water movements reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour beneath the bridge.
