Old Olden Church, Heritage church in Olden, Norway
Old Olden Church is a white wooden building with a cruciform design, where a central square connects four arms each measuring 6 by 6 meters. The interior is simply arranged and accommodates around 250 people.
The building was constructed in 1759 by master builder Jon Langeland, replacing a structure destroyed by a severe winter storm in 1757. This reconstruction followed directly from that natural disaster and has shaped the village ever since.
The church interior holds objects from earlier buildings, including decorated pews with carved names and dates from the previous stave church. These pieces tell stories of people who gathered here across generations.
The church functions as a museum today and is typically open only for special occasions such as Constitution Day or St. Olaf's Day. Visitors should check ahead to learn when it is accessible, as opening times are limited.
The altarpiece dates from 1772 and blends canvas paintings with carved wooden figures in an unusual composition. The church also preserves a Bible from the 16th century, documenting its long connection to local believers.
