Nuwakot District

Nuwakot is an administrative district in Bagmati Province with terrain that ranges from tropical lowlands to alpine highlands. Bidur functions as its administrative center and serves as the main hub for the various municipalities within its borders.

The district was formed during Nepal's unification campaign when King Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered the territory from local rulers. This conquest marked an important moment in the creation of the modern Nepali state.

The name comes from 'nawa' meaning nine and 'kort' meaning sacred sites, referring to nine hilltop shrines that hold deep meaning for local residents. Visitors can still sense how these locations shape the rhythms and practices of communities throughout the region.

The district spans different elevations, so visitors should be prepared for varying weather conditions and terrain. The dry season offers the best conditions for travel and exploration throughout the region.

Nuwakot Durbar is a seven-story citadel in Bidur that becomes a gathering point for thousands during the Dashain festival. This structure reflects the architectural importance of the location and how it continues to serve as a center for community celebrations.
