Bhairabi Temple, Hindu temple in Bidur, Nepal
Bhairabi Temple is a Hindu temple in Bidur featuring pagoda-style architecture with brick construction, wooden columns, and a copper roof. It stands near the Trishuli Gandaki River and displays multiple layers of construction from different periods.
The temple was founded in 1760 during the reign of Prithvi Narayan Shah, Nepal's first king. Major reconstructions were added in 1793 under Bahadur Shah, reshaping the building that stands today.
Metal and stone lion pairs flank the entrance, representing protection in Hindu tradition. Inside, sculptures of deities and the Aasthamatrika show how worship and spiritual beliefs are expressed through carved forms.
The temple underwent complete restoration after the 2015 earthquake, with all repairs finished by August 2020. Visitors will find a well-maintained site that has recovered its traditional structure.
The temple's chief priest, called Dhami, inherits the role through family succession rather than selection. This position historically required royal permission to cross nearby rivers, reflecting a unique blend of religious and administrative authority.
