Kopan Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery on Kopan Hill, Kathmandu, Nepal
The monastery stands on a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, featuring traditional Tibetan architecture with ornate decorations and Buddhist symbols throughout its buildings.
Lamas Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche established the monastery in 1969 after purchasing land from the royal astrologer of Nepal.
The monastery follows the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, offering extensive teachings and meditation practices according to Lama Tsong Khapa's lineage.
Visitors can access the monastery grounds every Saturday between 10 AM and 4 PM, with English-language Buddhist courses available throughout the year.
The adjacent Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery has grown from 4 to 400 nuns in less than 35 years, providing equal educational opportunities.
