Guhyeshwari Temple, Hindu temple near Bagmati River, Kathmandu, Nepal.
Guhyeshwari Temple is a Hindu temple near the Bagmati River in Kathmandu District, Nepal. The courtyard shows a roof held up by four gilded snake figures, and a spring rises from below ground level within the compound.
King Pratap Malla ordered a major renewal and expansion of the temple during the 17th century. This work established it as one of the main Shakti pilgrimage sites in the country.
The temple ceremonies are conducted by specific Brahmin clans of the Newar community, with Karmacharya priests performing daily rituals.
The temple sits about one kilometer east of Pashupatinath and allows visitors who are not Hindu only limited access. You can visit the outer courtyard, but the inner areas remain open only to worshippers.
Hindu tradition connects this site to the fall of a body part of the goddess Sati to earth. This legend explains why the temple is considered a sacred Shakti Peeth and draws pilgrims from across South Asia.
