The Taragaon Museum, Art gallery in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
The Taragaon Museum is an art gallery in Kathmandu Valley spread across three buildings, displaying photographs, maps, and drawings that document Nepal's architectural history. The collections systematically record how building styles, urban planning, and constructed forms have changed from the 20th century to today.
The building was originally constructed in the 1970s as a hostel for visiting artists and scientists. It transformed into a museum in 2014 to preserve Nepal's modern architectural heritage.
The Nepal Architecture Archive displays rare photographs and documents that show how Nepal's cities and neighborhoods have changed over generations, gathered from many different contributors. This collection tells the story of how streets, buildings, and public spaces evolved and transformed.
The spaces are spread across multiple floors and buildings, so visitors should allow enough time to explore everything. Orientation is straightforward since the exhibitions are clearly marked with signs and organized into thematic sections.
The building itself is a living example of contemporary Nepali architecture, with characteristic round windows and brick walls that mirror its contents. This physical form demonstrates how modern local construction techniques and materials can be used creatively.
