Ilam District, Administrative district in eastern Nepal.
Ilam District is an administrative region in eastern Nepal covering roughly 1,700 square kilometers with elevations ranging from about 140 to over 3,600 meters. Tea estates spread across the sloping hillsides near mountain streams, creating terraced gardens that define the landscape.
The area was originally part of independent Limbuwan states before it was integrated into Nepal in the early 1800s through territorial agreements. This historical incorporation shaped how the region is organized today.
Multiple ethnic groups including Rai, Limbu, and Brahmin communities live here, each keeping their own customs and ways of life. You can see these traditions reflected in how people celebrate, eat, and organize their daily routines throughout the region.
The district headquarters at Ilam Municipality sits roughly 600 kilometers from Kathmandu and has regular bus connections to reach it. You will find several places to stay near the town and around the tea gardens in the surrounding area.
The region produces Ilam Tea, which is recognized internationally and grows in specific conditions across several estates. This tea is a core part of what drives the local economy.
