Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary

Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the highlands of Darjeeling district featuring twin lakes at about 2 kilometers elevation. One of the lakes has a snake sculpture and seating areas designed for visitors to rest and observe the surroundings.

The sanctuary was established in 1985 to protect regional plants and animals. The discovery of Himalayan salamanders during the 1960s demonstrated the ecological importance of this highland area.

Temples scattered throughout the sanctuary reflect the religious traditions of nearby communities. These spaces show how worship and nature coexist within the protected area.

The area is accessible via Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, with the Jorepokhri Tourist Lodge providing accommodation on-site. Plan for travel time since the location sits in an elevated region away from major towns.

The sanctuary harbors Himalayan salamanders known locally as Gora, which thrive in this high-altitude environment. These amphibians are specially adapted to the harsh mountain climate and represent one of the main reasons this area was designated for protection.
