Roy Villa, Heritage building on Lebong Cart Road, Darjeeling, India
Roy Villa is a four-story building on Lebong Cart Road in Darjeeling featuring traditional architectural elements and mountain views from multiple levels. The structure combines local building styles with functional spaces for living and gathering areas throughout its floors.
The building was originally constructed by Dwarakanath Roy and later became the residence of Sister Nivedita, a prominent social reformer of the late 1800s. After decades of various ownership, the Ramakrishna Mission took over the property in 2013.
The villa served as a gathering place for intellectuals and social reformers in the early 1900s who discussed education and social issues within its walls. Visitors can walk through the same spaces where these important conversations took place.
The building can be easily reached from Darjeeling Railway Station with regular transport options along the main road. Its location on Lebong Cart Road provides convenient access and is close to other places in the town center.
Sister Nivedita, an Irish-born reformer, spent about a year living there and left a strong impact on the local community through her education and social work. The room where she lived and worked remains an important part of the building's story.
