Avongrove Tea Estate, Tea garden in Darjeeling district, India
Avongrove Tea Estate is a tea garden in Darjeeling's hillside landscape that spreads across different elevations. The plantation sits in the Rungbong Valley along the Balasun River and takes advantage of the region's natural conditions for tea growing.
The tea garden was founded in 1889 and has shaped the region's landscape since then. After a long closure, it resumed operations in 2008 under new management.
Five hundred workers maintain the gardens throughout the year, producing specialized Darjeeling teas including peony rosette and handcrafted florette varieties.
The plantation sits at different elevations, so visitors should expect varying weather conditions across the grounds. Sturdy footwear and weather protection are therefore advisable for a visit.
The gardens have access to year-round water sources, making irrigation possible throughout all seasons. These natural water resources allow the plants to be supplied even during drier periods.
