Ermita Church, Catholic parish church in Ermita district, Manila, Philippines
Ermita Church is a modern place of worship with straight lines, numerous clerestory windows, and a prominent statue of the Virgin Mary on its facade. The interior preserves the original carved wooden figure, while a replica is displayed for the daily veneration of worshippers.
Spanish soldiers discovered a shrine at this location in 1571 where local residents gathered around a wooden representation of the Virgin Mary standing among pandan plants. The building visible today is already the ninth version of the sanctuary standing at this historic spot.
The Marian image in this sanctuary shows Asian features and was crafted from native molave wood, reflecting the connection between Philippine traditions and faith. Visitors can see how local craftsmanship shapes the way people here understand their spiritual heritage.
The building opens for regular services throughout the week at different times depending on the day. Visitors should check ahead to ensure they arrive during the times when it welcomes guests.
The current building, completed in 1953, stands on a site where at least eight other church versions were built before it. These repeated reconstructions show how deeply meaningful this place has been to worshippers across the centuries.
