Patapat Viaduct, Coastal bridge in Pagudpud, Philippines
Patapat Viaduct is a concrete bridge along the northern Luzon coast between the Cordillera mountains and the sea. The roadway runs on stilts over the water and follows the cliff face that drops steeply to the bay.
A South Korean construction company completed the work in October 1986, replacing an old narrow passage. The new link opened the road between Ilocos and Cagayan Valley for long-distance traffic.
The bridge serves as a connection point between fishing communities of Pagudpud, where 20,000 residents maintain traditional fishing and rice farming practices.
Buses from Laoag to Pagudpud run daily and cross the structure on the way along the coast. Those wishing to get off can ask the driver to stop at a nearby spot.
Some sections of the roadway edge allow views down to fishing boats steering close to the rock face. On weekends, motorcyclists often pull over onto the shoulder to enjoy the view.
