Nowy Targ, Regional capital in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland.
Nowy Targ sits where two rivers meet, the Czarny Dunajec and the Biały Dunajec, enclosed by the Gorce Mountains at 585 meters (1920 feet) above sea level. The town spreads across the valley and serves as a regional center with residential neighborhoods, shops and public buildings along the main streets.
The settlement received town rights in 1346 from King Casimir the Great and became known as Novum Forum. Over the centuries it grew into a trading center that benefited from its position along commercial routes.
Every Thursday and Saturday the weekly market opens its stalls, where traders offer regional produce and handcrafted goods from the surrounding area. The market tradition draws residents from nearby villages who sell their produce and craft directly.
The place works as a transport junction with rail connections and bus lines leading to larger cities across the region. Visitors find accommodation options and restaurants around the main streets and market square.
The nearby Bor na Czerwonem Nature Reserve shelters protected species including sundew plants, mountain pines and black grouse. Visitors can explore the walking paths through the reserve, which preserves a special peatland landscape.
