Cheleiros

Cheleiros is a medieval settlement nestled in a valley along the Lizandro River, with hills surrounding the area and traditional Portuguese stone buildings scattered throughout. The landscape combines rural structures with a strong winemaking presence that shapes the local environment.

The settlement received its first charter from King Sancho I in 1195 and maintained its role as a municipal center for several centuries afterward. This long-standing importance shaped how the place developed and was organized over time.

The community preserves rural Portuguese traditions through local wine production, using old grape varieties and keeping historical winemaking practices alive in daily life.

A walking route of about 8 kilometers connects the settlement with vineyards, natural landmarks, and neighboring villages, offering different ways to explore the area. The path is accessible on foot and can be adapted based on your interests and pace.

A local winery called Manzwine operates both a production facility and a museum displaying archaeological objects found across the area. This combination lets visitors see both how wine is made today and physical evidence of daily life from centuries past.
