Alcobaça Monastery, Gothic Cistercian monastery in Alcobaça, Portugal.
Alcobaça Monastery is a Gothic Cistercian religious complex in Portugal featuring a Latin-cross layout with towering nave columns. The spaces are naturally lit through side windows and adorned throughout with detailed Gothic sculptural work and carved stone details.
King Afonso Henriques founded this religious center in 1153, and it grew into one of Portugal's most influential monasteries over time. The community expanded significantly across the centuries and shaped the country's religious and cultural development.
The monastery housed one of Portugal's largest medieval libraries that attracted scholars from across the region. The monks shaped intellectual life in the surrounding area through their copying work and the knowledge they preserved and shared here.
The complex welcomes many visitors from around the world, with guided tours offered on varying schedules depending on the season. It helps to check current opening hours before your visit, as these may change throughout the year.
The monastery's kitchen from the 18th century displays remarkable engineering with a water system directing river flow directly through the space. A network of chimneys provided ventilation and allowed the preparation of meals for the large community.
