Mangualde, Municipality in Viseu District, Portugal
Mangualde is a municipality in Viseu District located in central Portugal, spanning roughly 219 square kilometers. The territory is divided into twelve civil parishes with a combined population of around 20,000.
In 1102, Count Henry and Countess Theresa granted the territory formal rights that established the foundation of the municipality we see today. This royal recognition marked the beginning of urban development in the region.
The place preserves medieval street patterns from two original settlements that eventually merged into one center. Walking through the town, you can sense how these distinct communities once existed side by side.
The municipality sits roughly 240 kilometers from Lisbon and about 90 kilometers from Porto, easily accessible via main road networks. Its central location on major routes makes navigation straightforward for visitors.
The Nossa Senhora do Castelo site contains remains of fortifications built before Roman times, which the Romans later reused as a military stronghold. This layered history shows how strategically important the location was across many centuries.
