João Paulo II Airport, International airport in Ponta Delgada, Portugal
João Paulo II Airport sits on the northwestern coast of São Miguel Island and operates a 2,497-meter runway handling passenger and cargo flights. The complex includes a modern terminal with facilities for both international and domestic connections, serving as the main entry point to the Azores.
The facility opened in 1969 under President Américo Tomás, launching regular air connections between the Azores and mainland Portugal. Operator ANA Aeroportos renamed the site in 1995 following the papal visit and expanded it to accommodate growing international traffic.
The facility honors Pope John Paul II, who visited the Azores in 1991, connecting the airport's identity to a moment of religious importance for local residents. Many islanders use this gateway to maintain family ties with mainland Portugal and the diaspora communities abroad.
Operating hours run from 5 AM until midnight, with shuttle buses connecting regularly to downtown Ponta Delgada. Visitors can find taxis outside the terminal and rental car desks directly in the arrivals hall.
The site is the only major airport in the Azores with direct transatlantic links to North America. The terminal also processes regular weather flights important for Atlantic climate research.
