Forte da Má Ferramenta

Forte da Ma Ferramenta is a fortification on Terceira Island in the Azores, with thick walls and gun positions aimed toward the south and east. The ruins lie near the coast and occupy a small area, with only foundations and wall sections remaining.

The fortification was built between 1579 and 1581 during a political crisis in Portugal and designed by an Italian military architect. It was part of the strategy to protect the Azores islands from attacks and secure their importance in the Atlantic.

The fort reflects 16th-century military construction methods and shows how Portugal protected its islands against invaders. The remains tell of a time when such fortifications were crucial for regional defense.

The ruins are accessible through local pathways and lie near the larger fortress grounds of Sao Mateus da Calheta. It helps to use local landmarks for orientation, since the remains are small and easy to miss.

Military reports from the 18th century mention the site under the name Redoubt Ma Ferramenta and document difficulties with its upkeep. These records show how hard it was to maintain remote fortifications over time.
